On Thursday, June 22nd, 2023, the Development and Partnership in Action (DPA) and the steering committee members of the Extractive Industry Social and Environmental Impact (EISEI) network hosted the 45th EISEI Network Meeting at the SUNWAY Hotel in Phnom Penh. The meeting aimed to raise awareness among network members about two key topics: (1) the current management and development of the mining sector in Cambodia, and (2) the contribution of the private sector (Cement Company) to local community development and governance in the mining sector, with the participation of stakeholders, including updates on the recent environmental and social impacts from exploration and exploitation activities. The meeting was held to discuss how to monitor and find appropriate solutions.
The esteemed guests who attended the meeting included HE Ing Depola, the Director General of the General Department of Mineral Resources of the Ministry of Mines and Energy, and Mr. Keo Tuot, the Deputy Director General of the General Department of Mineral Resources of the Ministry of Mines and Energy. Mr. Bun Sophea, the Public and Community Coordinator of Chip Mong Inc. Cement Corporation, as well as members of the network, donors, development partners, and community representatives, totaling 36 participants (18 female and 18 male), were also present.
During his welcoming remarks, HE Ung Dipola expressed his appreciation for the network’s activities. He also provided background information on the drafting of laws and regulations related to mineral resources, specifically the policy on mineral resources. This policy requires full public participation to effectively and transparently manage the sector in line with the Royal Government of Cambodia’s vision for the sector: “Development of mineral resources for the benefit of the economy and society with good governance and high environmental responsibility”
